The Essence of an Empowering Character

With the Best Girl 2017 contest raging on, I thought I’d enlighten the heathens who failed to vote Shirayuki beyond the first round.

Shirayuki and everyone in Akagami no Shirayuki-hime are all characters empowered by each other in positive directions, with characterization that occurs over the proper amount of time instead of having the idea punched through their skulls by your typical shounen protagonists. More people should watch this anime, if only to see a female protagonist done correctly. Plus she’s cute af.

Why You Shouldn’t Be Watching: Sword Oratoria

Today, I bring you another Why You Shouldn’t Be Watching with a heavy heart, because I very much wanted to like Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Gaiden: Sword Oratoria. It had all the makings of a great companion series to the original, but sadly lost its footing in the wake of strange creative choices that differ from the manga in big ways.

You can find out why what those are and why the anime adaptation is so bad after the break.

“Bungou Stray Dogs” Film Receives 30-Second CM and Key Visual

The official Bungou Stray Dogs website has been updated with a new 30-second commercial and key visual for the upcoming anime film, Bungou Stray Dogs -Dead Apple-!

For those unfamiliar, the series’ synopsis can be found below:

“For weeks, Atsushi Nakajima’s orphanage has been plagued by a mystical tiger that only he seems to be aware of. Suspected to be behind the strange incidents, the 18-year-old is abruptly kicked out of the orphanage and left hungry, homeless, and wandering through the city.

While starving on a riverbank, Atsushi saves a rather eccentric man named Osamu Dazai from drowning. Whimsical suicide enthusiast and supernatural detective, Dazai has been investigating the same tiger that has been terrorizing the boy. Together with Dazai’s partner Doppo Kunikida, they solve the mystery, but its resolution leaves Atsushi in a tight spot. As various odd events take place, Atsushi is coerced into joining their firm of supernatural investigators, taking on unusual cases the police cannot handle, alongside his numerous enigmatic co-workers.”

The film is scheduled to open in theaters in early Spring 2018. More information on the project will be available soon.

2nd PV for “Netsuzou TRap -NTR-” TV Anime Released

Netsuzou TRap (NTR), the yuri television anime adaptation, has received its second promotional video! The video previews the series’ opening theme, “Blue Bud Blue” by Haruka Toujou.

The Netsuzou TRap manga series was acquired by Seven Seas Entertainment in December 2015 for English localization. Only the first two volumes have been released so far, with volume 3 set to release on July 11 and volume 4 on February 13.

Seven Seas Entertainment describes the synopsis below:

“Yuma and Hotaru have been friends since childhood, so it’s only natural that when Yuma is nervous about her new boyfriend, she asks Hotaru for advice. But when Hotaru starts coming onto Yuma for what feels like more than just ‘practice,’ what does it mean…? With boyfriends in the foreground but a secret, passionate tryst in the background, will Yuma and Hotaru try to forget what happened between them or have they fallen into a trap of true love and betrayal?”

Netsuzou TRap will begin airing on July 5.

Poll Results: Favorite Anime Costume?

The results were close, but kemonomimi (animal ears) made it out ahead by a mere 5 votes! Here to celebrate the victory for animal ears is a Dog Days header image. That anime is full of them.

Our next poll will be in honor of Father’s Day. Get ready to vote for: Best Anime Dad!

Dads can fulfill many different roles in an anime series. Whether they’re the absentee father, the supportive parent cheering on from the sidelines, the dad protagonist, or just an awful human being overall (looking at you, Shou Tucker), they all leave a lasting impact on their children.

Head on over to the sidebar and choose the best (not awful) dad from the list! (Sorry, no Gendo Ikaris or Gambinos in this poll.)

Caught in the Croswynd: Youjo Senki and the Dichotomy of Cute Killing

Youjo Senki is an anime that, at first glance, seems incredibly at odds with itself when you consider the contradiction between its setting and main character. But while the show’s plot is ridiculous on the surface, this series still manages to work surprisingly well when translated to the medium of anime. Having a cute, little girl tasked with the killing of soldiers in a pseudo-World War I Europe is a dichotomy that is strangely fascinating to watch, and more than a little addicting once you give it a try.

Take a look below the break to see the rest of my write up on this wonderfully sadistic show.
